Network and Wi-Fi for a small office: what to check

In small offices, the network is usually set up once and forgotten. The results show up slowly: Wi-Fi that drops, slow internet and a router still on its factory password.

What to check

  1. Router updated: firmware gets security fixes. Very old equipment with no updates should be replaced.
  2. Router admin password changed (never the factory one).
  3. Wi-Fi with WPA2 or WPA3 and a strong password.
  4. A separate network for visitors and customers, with no access to company computers and printers.
  5. Coverage: dead spots are usually solved with another access point, not cheap repeaters.
  6. Open ports and remote access: close what you don't use.
  7. Cable where possible: desktops and printers work better wired.
  8. A list of connected devices, so you notice anything odd.

Signs your network needs attention

  • Online meetings freezing.
  • A printer that "disappears" from the network.
  • Unknown devices connected.
  • Nobody knows the router password.
