Why OpenCode is trending

OpenCode is an open-source (MIT) coding agent that runs in the terminal, as an IDE extension or as a desktop app. As of October 12, 2026, the anomalyco/opencode repository had more than 212,000 GitHub stars according to the GitHub API, placing it among the most popular coding-agent projects on the platform.

In June, the company behind it, Anomaly (founded by Jay V and Frank Wang, the team behind Serverless Stack/SST), told BetaKit it had 8 million monthly active users, as reported by Awesome Agents. These figures are self-reported, with no independent audit.

OpenCode also showed up in OpenAI news: on "Day 1" of the 28-day Codex campaign, the GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol speed-up also applied to "Sign in with ChatGPT" partners, OpenCode among them.

What it does differently

  • Model-agnostic: configure any provider, such as Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek or local models via Ollama. Awesome Agents cites 75+ providers.
  • LSP integration: uses the Language Server Protocol to feed compiler and type errors to the model in structured form.
  • Agent modes: "Build" (full file access) and "Plan" (read-only, to review before running), plus background subagents.
  • Shareable sessions and an HTTP API mode.

How to install and connect

From the official README:

# install script
curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/install | bash

# or npm
npm i -g opencode-ai@latest

# or Homebrew (macOS and Linux)
brew install anomalyco/tap/opencode

There is also a desktop app (opencode.ai/download). Then connect a provider and run opencode inside your project folder. For custom or local models, point the config at any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.

Things to watch

  • Speed: comparisons cited by Awesome Agents show OpenCode slower than Codex CLI on some tasks.
  • Fast-moving project: thousands of open issues. Test it in your workflow before standardizing.
  • Security: "Build" mode has full file access. Use "Plan" to review, run in repos without exposed secrets and check commands before approving.
  • Costs: the core is free, but you pay your model provider. Optional paid plans exist (OpenCode Go and Black).

Who it suits

Teams that want one agent across many models, to avoid vendor lock-in, or to run local models for data reasons.
