The launch
On August 13, 2026, DeepSeek made the DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813 checkpoint generally available: a Mixture-of-Experts with 1.6 trillion parameters, about 49 billion active, a 1-million-token window and weights under the MIT license on Hugging Face. The API name remains deepseek-v4-pro.
Why it matters
Unlike restrictive licenses, MIT allows broad commercial use. That puts V4-Pro in the “real open weights” conversation for enterprises. On GitHub, deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness led August star rankings on GitStarClub with about +122.8k stars that month.
Caveat
Serving 1.6T is still expensive. MIT openness does not erase inference cost. Even so, for anyone comparing DeepSeek, Meta and Moonshot, August reinforced the large open-weight wave.
