What happened

In June 2026, on June 8, during the WWDC 2026 keynote, Apple unveiled Siri AI, an entirely new version of Siri rebuilt from the ground up on the next generation of Apple Intelligence. Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, called it "a dramatically more capable and conversational assistant."

The features became available the same day for developer testing in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27. For the public, Apple promised a beta later in 2026, starting in English.

What Siri AI does

  • Personal context: finds information in messages, emails, photos and other apps. Apple's examples: finding a restaurant recommendation a friend sent, or a hotel confirmation number in an old email. Third-party apps join in when developers integrate with Spotlight.
  • Onscreen awareness: answers questions about what's on screen and acts on it.
  • Web knowledge: fetches up-to-date information on virtually any topic, with follow-up conversation.
  • Cross-app actions: drafting an email from scratch, editing and sharing photos, adding a recipe to Notes.
  • A dedicated Siri app: conversation history synced via iCloud across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro.
  • Expanded Visual Intelligence: a new Siri mode in the iPhone Camera and, for the first time, on iPad and Mac.
  • Writing tools almost anywhere you type, mirroring the tone the user usually takes with each recipient.

Architecture and privacy

Apple says Siri was rebuilt on the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, running on device and on servers with Private Cloud Compute. When the cloud handles a request, personal data is not stored or made accessible to Apple, and outside experts can verify that promise. Core pieces such as the Spotlight index run entirely on device.

Important limitations

  • Devices: iPhone 15 Pro and later (including the iPhone 16 lineup), Macs and iPads with M1 or later, Vision Pro and Apple Watch Series 9 or later, among others. More expressive voices and advanced dictation require even newer devices with at least 12 GB of memory.
  • Language: the beta starts in English, with expansion promised.
  • European Union: at launch, Siri AI would not be available on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS in the EU; only on Mac and Vision Pro.
  • China: the new features would not be available while Apple works through regulatory requirements.

What this means for businesses

  1. Corporate data on iPhones becomes more reachable by AI: review MDM policies and what corporate apps expose to Spotlight.
  2. App developers should integrate actions and content with Spotlight and the App Toolbox to appear in Siri's answers.
  3. User training: assistants that act across apps require care with permissions and malicious onscreen content (prompt injection).
