The deal
On July 22, 2026, AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic partnership for Anthropic to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in AMD's Helios rack-scale systems. The first gigawatt starts deploying in the first half of 2027.
As part of the deal, AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, in tranches tied to deployment milestones. Reuters reported that AMD is set to sell Anthropic tens of billions of dollars in AI servers.
Why it matters
- Chip diversification: Anthropic already used Nvidia GPUs, Google TPUs and Amazon Trainium. AMD joins as another major supplier.
- Validation for AMD: landing a frontier lab strengthens MI450 and Helios as a real alternative to Nvidia.
- Power scale: deals measured in gigawatts show AI's bottleneck is now energy and data centers as much as silicon.
The "invest and sell" model
The structure repeats a 2025-2026 pattern: the chip vendor invests in the lab, which then buys the chips. It speeds up expansion but raises questions about mutual dependence and how much demand is financed by the supplier itself.
What to watch
Timelines depend on hardware and power delivery in 2027. The investment is "up to" $5B and milestone-based, so the final total may be lower.
